In this painting two panels stand side by side to create one composition, a seascape with the sun setting behind Pirate Island, which is a tiny island at the entrance to Hay Harbor on Fishers Island. Vibrant blue, purple, and pink clouds build across the major portion of the painting, from wisps on the left to a multi-layered mash-up on the right, while the water below reflects the deep oranges and magentas of the receding sun. Pirate Island is flanked by slivers of the surrounding points of land, and, in the foreground, a faint smear of the sand bar breaks the surface of the water.
