This painting, in a panoramic format, shows the shadowed lawn beneath a stand of about 15 robust trees, mostly in dark greens with umber trunks, on a sunlit day with a blue bay of water beyond the lawn under a light blue sky with a distant shoreline in blue/greys. There are two boats on the water near us, but just small flicks of white paint in the painting. The choreography of dappled light and shadow streaked across the middle ground and foreground is the key to the painting, with the greens shifting subtly from more yellow/orange to more sap green. The highlights of sun high in a few trees play counterpoint to this choreography.
