***For those of you with low vision:
This painting depicts the interior of a very small room glowing in warm sienna sunlight. Curtains blow through an open window that shows a lawn and a dock on water dazzling with pale pinks and blues. A shaft of light cuts across the foreground and lights the towels reflected in the medicine cabinet mirror, while a shaving kit and a tube of toothpaste rest on the shaded counter below. Embedded in the center of this image is a second image in a square that depicts the shadow of an airplane cast on a vibrant green field beside a thin grey strip of runway.
The nautical chart that is painted in a faint glaze over the outside image was chosen because it is a different way of drawing the surroundings of this place; it shows the runways of the Fishers Island airport, which is part of the narrative of the painting. Nautical charts tell us what we’ll find there, including warnings about trying to drop an anchor on a bottom that we can’t see, such as rocky: RKY, or hard: HRD. That is a narrative way of describing the surroundings, much as this style of painting is.
